Adriana B. Ferreira, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Northwestern University, is investigating the effects of a protein called synapsin III on brain development at the molecular level. This protein has been located on the region of chromosome 22 previously reported to associated with schizophrenia. Dr. Ferreira will use neurons of the hippocampus in culture to examine the localization of synapsin in the growth cone of developing neurons, its role in the molecular structure of growth cones, and the effect of removing synapsin on the properties of the growth cones. The data to be obtained from this study may provide new and precise insights into the cell biology of synapsin, which may be of importance in understanding the causes of schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
