Serguei O Fetissov, M.D., Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2007) of INSERM, Universite Paris VI, is studying the eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia. He hypothesizes that the abnormalities characteristic of these disorders can result from the dysregulation of a functional link between the immune system and the central nervous system. He therefore plans develop animal models to explore evidence from his lab of the role of autoantibodies (antibodies that attack the body’s own tissues) directed against specific molecular targets in brain mechanisms involved in appetite and emotion. His hope is to clarify and provide data for a complete biological theory underlying eating disorders, which may help in the development of rational treatments. Program Area: EATING DISORDERS |
