Kenneth N. Fish, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of The Scripps Research Institute, is examining the effects of a mutation in a gene called reelin in animal studies. Mice with a mutation in this gene have a disorganization in the formation of important brain structures and a disruption in migration of neurons in the developing brain. Dr. Fish will develop a culture system in which the involvement of newly identified proteins related to the reelin protein can be tested. These systems will help fill the gap between animal models of reelin-deficient animals and the molecular identification of mutations in reelin and related genes. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
