Paul Bernard Fitzgerald, MBBS, MPM, FRANZCP (Young Investigator 2003) of Monash University, will use Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive means of stimulating nerve cells in superficial areas of the brain, to study the functioning of nerve cell circuits in patients with schizophrenia. Abnormal functioning of nerve circuits in outer regions of the brain has been implicated in schizophrenia. Chemicals involved in these circuits are important for learning and information processing. This work will provide key information as to the function of these brain areas and may aid in the development of new therapies. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
