Cynthia H.Y. Fu, M.D., MSc, FRCPC (Young Investigator 2002) of Institute of Psychiatry, will examine between brain structure and function in depression by treating depressed patients during an acute episode with cognitive behavioral therapy and then follow their recovery (subjects will not receive medication). Structural and function at MRI's will be given to study impairments in memory, motor function, and the 'executive function' ability to avoid distractions. The different areas of the brain affected by depression will be analyzed to evaluate how these regions interact during illness and what modifications may occur in recovery. The effects of psychotherapy on the regions of the brain will also be studied. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
