Ronald P.A. Gaykema, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of University of Virginia, is investigating the effect of infection on neural and brain components that may be responsible for anxiety symptoms. It has been shown that infectious bacterial agents can cause anxiety-like symptoms in mice. Dr. Gaykema will compare mice infected with C. jejuni, a common food-borne bacterium with uninfected controls with regard to anxiety-like symptoms, and will assess their brains and sensory nerves for signs of activation in response to the infection. This work may help to better understand the causative link between infectious agents and anxiety disorders. Program Area: ANXIETY DISORDERS\Anxiety Disorder |
