Russell N. Van Gelder, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Washington University, will examine the influence of the circadian clock on affective disease in an animal model by performing behavioral testing on mice genetically engineered to have abnormal or absent circadian clock. By using certain experiments with mice, Dr. Gelder hopes to address whether psychiatric disease caused circadian dysfunction or if abnormalities of the circadian clock cause psychiatric disease such as major depression, seasonal affective disorder and bipolar affective disorder, which all show substantial in both circadian rhythmicity and sleep-wakefulness cycles.
