Tony P. George, M.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Connecticut Mental Health Center, is examining the effects of a chemical called mecamylamine (MEC) on changes in neuropsychological function during nicotine abstinence in cigarette smoking schizophrenic patients and controls. MEC blocks the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. Neuropsychological function will be assessed before and after treatment with this drug in schizophrenic smokers and control smokers. This study will permit determination of the effects of nicotine abstinence and resumption; and potentially lead to a new treatment for neuropsychological deficits in patients with schizophrenia. This study is of particular interest given the high rates of smoking in schizophrenic patients. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia\Nicotine |
