Howard Gershenfeld, M.D., Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2005) of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, plans to study whether genetic markers called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) throughout the whole genome can be used to predict whether certain patients with recurrent major depression will respond better to antidepressant treatment than others. In this proposal, Dr. Gershenfeld plans to recruit, assess, and study 400 patients with recurrent major depression: 200 who are medication-responsive and 200 who are treatment-resistant. He will correlate treatment responsiveness or refractoriness with an analysis of the DNA of each of the individuals. He then hopes to develop a panel of predictive biomarkers for each group. Such a panel could ultimately allow clinicians to target treatments to appropriate individuals and would discriminate patients for further clinical studies to test new medications.
