Subroto Ghose, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, will explore the role of N-acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG), a peptide that is associated with the glutamatergic neurotransmitter system, in schizophrenia. This is important because post mortem studies reveal abnormal levels of NAAG in schizophrenia in specific brain regions and NAAG binds to two glutamate receptors in the brain, which have been shown to be involved in psychosis. Results of Dr. Ghose’s study may validate the evidence that glutamate does indeed play a major role in this illness, and specifically in psychosis. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
