Charles F. Gillespie, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Emory University, will examine the structural differences (polymorphisms) of genes that encode brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the receptor molecule TrkB, as prime candidate genes in PTSD and depression. Genetic variability between individuals as represented by these polymorphisms may make some people more vulnerable to the effects of traumatic experience than others. Such knowledge may lead, in turn, to new and better strategies for the prevention and treatment of PTSD and depression in the aftermath of trauma. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS\Anxiety Disorders/Mood Disorders\Anxiety Disorders/Unipolar\PTSD/Unipolar |
