Andrea Giuffrida, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2008) of University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, will examine evidence that may revise the hypothesis that cannabis (marijuana) use precipitates schizophrenia symptoms in vulnerable individuals. The hypothesis postulates that marijuana stimulates overactivity of the endocannabinoid system in the brain. Other studies, however, suggest that endocannabinoids may actually attenuate psychotic symptoms. Using a rat model of schizophrenia, this study will attempt to clarify the role of endocannabinoids in schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS |
