Laurent Givalois, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of University of Montpellier II, is investigating a class of molecules called brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in an animal model of depression. BDNF promotes the function and growth of serotonin neurons in the adult brain, and stress decreases BDNF messenger RNA in the adult rat brain. Dr. Givalois will determine if increased expression of BDNF in the hippocampus and hypothalamus could counteract some central noxious effects found in major depression in an animal model of depression induced by environmental stress. This study could help us to better understand the role of neurotrophic factors in depressive disorders. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
