Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, is examining the role of the serotonin type 1A receptor in anxiety. Mice that lack this receptor evidence more anxiety in behavioral tests. When this receptor is restored in the hippocampus, the mice are no longer anxious. In this study, Dr. Gordon will study neuronal activity in the hippocampus and the dorsal raphe, the area where serotonin comes from, in these mice. These results have implications for understanding the biochemical basis of anxiety. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Major Depressive Dis./Panic Dis./Obsessive Compulsive Dis. |
