Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, is examining how the serotonin-1 A receptor changes hippocampal neuronal activity, and how these changes in activity are related to anxiety. Using “knockout” mice that have been bred to lack the serotonin-1 A receptor, the study will restore the serotonin-1 A receptor in the knockouts, but only in one area of the brain: the hippocampus, which is thought to play a role in many brain functions including anxiety. The results will help guide future research into the causes and treatment of anxiety and depression. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Anxiety Disorders/Unipolar Depression |
