Deepak Grover, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Johns Hopkins University, aims to identify genes related to the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis that confer susceptibility to major depressive disorder. Studies have demonstrated that HPA axis abnormalities are present before the onset of depression, indicating predisposing genetic factors. Working with 1,000 depression patients and 1000 controls, Dr. Grover will pinpoint the most promising candidate genes and determine whether variants within them are over- or underrepresented in depression. Results from this study may lead to better understanding of causative factors in major depressive disorder and mechanisms through which the illness develops. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Unipolar |
