Kurt Haas, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, will test whether glutamate hypofunction disrupts dendritic growth by reducing synaptic glutamate receptor function in individual neurons in the brain, in vivo, while imaging dendritic arbor growth in real time or over many days, and whether glutamate hypofunction interferes with dendritic arbor growth induced by environmental stimuli. Schizophrenia is believed to originate from abnormal prenatal brain development; therefore findings from these experiments may provide a basis for understanding the origins of this devastating disease and potentially lead to treatments to prevent or alleviate schizophrenia symptoms. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
