Kristin K. Haga, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of University of Edinburgh, will use magnetic resonance spectroscopy examine levels of the neurotransmitters GABA and glutamate in patients who have depression secondary to a stroke. Recent studies suggest that patients with major depression have decreased GABA which recovers to normal levels following ECT or antidepressant treatment. This work may provide valuable insights into the nature of depression following stroke. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\Post-Stroke |
