Stephen J. Haggarty, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University, will explore epigenetic mechanisms -- nongenetic factors that affect gene expression -- in the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. Specifically, he is interested in mechanisms involving histones, proteins bound up with the gene’s DNA. Addressing the chemistry and cellular biology of the processes involved in mood regulation and their relationship to mental illness, he hopes to achieve better understanding of how antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics modulate neuronal signaling and neural circuitry and to identify novel molecular mechanisms for therapeutic intervention. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS\Mood Disorders/Schizophrenia\Bipolar/Schizophrenia |
