Tomas Hajek, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Dalhousie University, will use biochemical and imaging techniques to investigate brain structural and neurochemical risk factors for bipolar disorder. He will compare subjects at genetic risk, i.e., offspring of bipolar parents, both affected and unaffected, with healthy controls without familial bipolar risk. His expectation is that high-risk subjects will show neuroanatomical abnormalities. Identification of potential risk factors would help genetic and biochemical research into bipolar disorder and the creation of new animal models, and improve screening for early intervention in affected families. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
