Steven P. Hamilton, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, will utilize the complementary candidate gene approach to undertake an in-depth sequence analysis of five genes thought to be related to the clinical response to antidepressant medications. He will search for variations in the exonic and proximal flanking sequence of the transporters for serotonin and norepinephrine and three different serotonin receptors in DNA, and he will attempt to associate any DNA variants with a clinical response or adverse event data in a group of subjects involved in a study of relapse during maintenance therapy with placebo or fluoxetine in unipolar depressives and analyze the functional effects of variants in the regulatory regions of the these genes using innovative technologies. The study may have implications for selecting and predicting response to psychopharmacologic treatment in depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) |
