Eiji Hattori, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Chicago, is examining interactions between genetic regions in patients with bipolar disorder. Previous work has demonstrated linkage with bipolar disorder on a segment of chromosome 13. Recently, this investigator has found evidence for association of a small region (a locus) on chromosome 13 with bipolar disorder. In addition, two chromosomal regions, one on chromosome 4, were shown to interact with the chromosome 13 locus in predicting risk of bipolar disorder. The chromosome 4 locus codes for a glutamate receptor gene. In this grant, additional loci will be examined for interaction with the chromosome 13 locus, using analysis of mutations and genotyping of candidate genes in selected chromosomal regions. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
