Dan W. Haupt, M.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Washington University, will study schizophrenia patients from a heterogeneous community using sensitive testing to observe changes in glucose regulation, weight, and lipid levels as valproate (Depakote, a mood stabilizer) is added to each patient's treatment, and will be assessed for the effects of valproate or valproate plus atypical antipsychotics. Diabetes mellitus is more common in schizophrenia patients than the general population, and it is possible atypical antipsychotic medications may increase the risk, and the potential for adverse events may be increased by the increasingly common practice of combining atypical antipsychotics with mood stabilizers. This study may give clinicians the evidence they need to make informed decisions with regards to antipsychotic and valproate combination therapy and may contribute to increased vigilance in monitoring schizophrenia patients for adverse treatment effects.
