Dan W. Haupt, M.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Washington University School of Medicine, will use noninvasive techniques to measure cardiometabolic risk in schizophrenia patients, a population associated with higher than average rates of heart disease. He will use magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure fat in the liver to help understand how changes in abdominal fat impact changes in liver fat, which in turn regulates circulating inflammatory products and fats that affect the atherosclerotic process. Using ultrasound he will measure carotid artery wall thickness as a way to quantify vascular damage and provide an indicator of disease severity that can be used to assess interventions for psychiatric patients with cardiometabolic risk Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia\Diabetes |
