Daniel G. Herrera, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of New York Presbyterian Hospital - Westchester Division, is investigating the effects of stress hormones and neurotransmitters on different aspects of neuronal formation. The adult brain has stem cells that possess the capability of generating new neurons through a mechanism known as neurogenesis. Recently, researchers have suggested that neurogenesis in the hippocampus may play an important role in depression and stress disorders. Dr. Herrera has developed an assay obtaining new neurons directly from post-natal hippocampi and hopes this research may help in devising new approaches to the treatment of depression.
