William P. Hetrick, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Indiana University, is studying abnormalities of this cortico-cerebellar-thalamic-cortical brain circuit which is associated with schizophrenia. This circuit is responsible for cognitive and motor “synchrony” or smooth, temporally coordinated sequences of behavior. Dr. Hetrick will examine the functional integrity of the cerebellum in this circuit in people with schizophrenia using eye-blink conditioning (EBC), as patients with schizophrenia show conditioning abnormalities that indicate unusually enhanced cerebellar excitability. The results of the initial set of experiments will specify the associated functional deficits of the cerebellum in schizophrenia, as well as compliment existing knowledge. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
