Thomas R. Insel, M.D. (Distinguished Investigator 2001) of Emory University, will examine whether variations in two human receptor genes influence regional expression of the receptors. Two genes will be the subjects of focus: the promoters for the oxytocin and vasopressin VIa receptors. These receptors appear to play important roles in social behaviors in animals. In addition, Dr. Insel will examine whether variations in promoter sequences are associated with differences in social behavior observed in schizophrenia and autism. A human brain receptor mapping core will be built in order to complement ongoing rodent studies. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Schizophrenia/Mood Disorders/Autism |
