Irmansyah, M.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of University of Indonesia, is studying schizophrenia and its clinical prognosis. In Third World countries, its prevalence is increasing faster because factors such as improvements in life expectancy and the increasing size of young birth cohorts, and may overload mental health services in Indonesia. He will explore a sub-type of “benign” or acute schizophrenia which may be more frequent in certain populations to determine if a pattern of clinical characteristics and psychiatric morbidity differs in families with benign vs. deteriorating schizophrenic illnesses and if the familial pattern of psychiatric morbidity in the benign cases is consistent with a model of gene-environment interaction involving greater sensitivity to life stress. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
