Hadine Joffe, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Massachusetts General Hospital, is investigating the effects of adding an oral-contraceptive pill to serotonergic antidepressants that alone do not treat premenstrual worsening of depression. This study should provide insight into the role of female reproductive hormones in the brain and lead to the development of safe and appropriate strategies for use of oral contraceptives in women with depression.
