Sencan Kadaster, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, notes that childhood bipolar disorder is one of the most disabling forms of mental illness and carries a high mortality risk. Lithium is one of the most widely used medications to treat bipolar disorder in children, yet the mechanics of its action are largely unknown. Using the brain imaging technique, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), Dr. Kadaster will measure brain metabolite levels of children and adolescents with bipolar disorder before and during treatment with lithium. These results will be compared with healthy control subjects to determine if there is evidence of neurofunctional alterations in the bipolar group.
