Allan V. Kalueff (Kaluev), Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the National Institute of Mental Health, will look at two genes, the serotonin transporter (SERT) and DBNF genes, whose roles and interactions in the development of anxiety and depression are implicated but undefined. His hypothesis is that mice lacking SERT or SERT plus BDNF, may be particularly vulnerable to stressors, and that understanding the link between the genes will enable more effective treatment. Through a battery of stress tests, his laboratory will model the transition from anxiety to depression and assess behavior, and examine SERT and BDNF reaction to anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs and to neonatal and postnatal genetic manipulations.
