Beata Karolewicz, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, is studying the role of the glutamate system in major depressive disorder. Glutamate is a major neurotransmitter in the brain. Work in Dr. Karolewicz’s laboratory with postmorten brain tissue from severely depressed patients provided the first evidence of abnormal levels of molecules involved in glutamate signaling, also observed in neuroimaging studies in the brains of patients. Dr. Karolewicz will now examine glutamate metabolizing enzymes to elucidate the molecular underpinning of glutamate pathology, which may yield new depression treatments.
