Michele P. Kelly, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Pennsylvania, is investigating a genetic alteration in some schizophrenia patients that causes increased expression of a protein called G alpha s. Brain images of mice developed in the Kelly laboratory to overexpress G alpha s, showed schizophrenia-associated deficits. One deficit observed in both mice and schizophrenia patients is enlargement of the lateral ventricles, apparently due to a reduction in another brain region, the striatum. Dr. Kelly will now use magnetic resonance imaging to see whether the deficits are due to delayed neurodevelopment or enhanced neurodegeneration, and if they contribute to the schizophrenia-relevant neurocognitive deficits in the mice. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
