Haesue Florence Kim, M.D. (Young Investigator 2004) of Baylor College of Medicine, proposes to study the cognitive problems that individuals with bipolar disorder experience, even when they are euthymic, neither manic nor depressed. Dr. Kim plans to determine baseline cognitive functions of 80 patients with bipolar disorder in an euthymic state compared with 80 matched individuals without psychiatric illness to determine if both groups perform differently on a variety of psychiatric scales and to determine if the impairment, if any, may be related to duration or severity of illness, number of mood episodes and medication use. Subjects will be evaluated for attention, non-verbal and verbal memory, language functioning, executive function and mental flexibility, and other cognitive processes. Understanding cognitive function in bipolar disease is key to the treatment and well-being of patients and to understanding the disorder. Few studies have looked at this issue. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
