Laura Kunkel, M.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Massachusetts General Hospital, is studying deficit schizophrenia, which is characterized by primary, enduring negative symptoms. Using three comparison approaches-a neurological evaluation, neuropsychological tests/clinical histories and fMRI. Dr. Kunkel hopes to strengthen evidence that suggests that there are different neurological, neuropsychological and neurophysiological correlates of deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia and that deficit subgroup represents a separate disease entity from the nondeficit subgroup. Categorizing patients into deficit and nondeficit groups may provide a considerable reduction in the heterogeneity of schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
