Robyn Lints, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, is working to identify genes that control the development or identity of dopamine and serotonin neurons in humans. By doing so, an invaluable source for candidate genes for schizophrenia and other mental disorders can be generated. A novel, two-step strategy is proposed to isolate such human genes. First, a screen for genes that control dopamine and serotonin neuron development in the nematode worm will be conducted.
