Fang Liu, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Centre For Addiction and Mental Health, is investigating the mechanism by which two receptor systems-dopamine receptors and ligand gated channels-can interact. It is proposed that this interaction occurs by their direct physical coupling, independent of a class of proteins called G proteins, which are involved in carrying neurochemical signals. This work may help explain whether neurotransmitter aberrations found in schizophrenia are a consequence of dysregulation of subtype specific dopamine type 1 and type 5 receptors from NMDA and GABA-A receptor units, respectively. This work should further our understanding of the molecular biology of the dopamine synapse. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
