Gianmaria Maccaferri, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2008) of Northwestern University, seeks to better understand some of the therapeutic effects of drugs used in therapy of mood disorders, specifically their actions on the 5-HT3 serotonin receptors in the brain. Dr. Maccaferri will use electrophysiological and anatomical techniques to study the physiological and pharmacological properties of 5-HT3 receptor-mediated synaptic transmission in interneurons recorded from rat hippocampal slices. Understanding the physiological and pharmacological properties of 5-HT3 receptor-mediated synaptic signaling is important to gain insights into network mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of mood disorders, and for the development of therapeutic strategies based on novel ideas.
