Clare E. Mackay, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Oxford, will apply new methods of magnetic resonance imaging to investigate white-matter pathways between areas in the brain implicated in bipolar disorder. Preliminary data from Dr. Mackay’s laboratory suggest that white matter in the frontal lobe of the cortex is more abnormal in patients with bipolar disorder than in patients with schizophrenia as well as in healthy controls. Follow-up studies will test Dr. Mackay’s hypothesis that abnormal frontal lobe connectivity is a defining feature of bipolar disorder.
