Simone Macri, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanita, will attempt to evaluate animal models of major depressive disorder. Current models present major limitations. For example, while genetic predispositions and environmental adversities combine to contribute to human depression, they tend to be studied separately in animal models. Also, early life manipulations yield inconsistent results in adult rats. Dr. Macri will analyze the factors mediating the effects of neonatal manipulation on adult offspring. Also, predisposition to depressive symptoms will be mimicked through a tryptophan-restricted diet, which induces depressive-like symptoms in rodents. The two approaches will then be combined.
