Vincent A. Magnotta, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2004) of the University of Iowa, proposes using 3-D chemical shift imaging to acquire a map of brain metabolites in a sample of 20 first-episode neuroleptic-naive patients with schizophrenia and 20 matched normal controls. High resolution structural MR scans also will be obtained to account for the tissue composition in each unit of volume, since metabolite concentrations vary with respect to tissue type. Metabolite maps for N-acetyl aspartate, creatine and choline will be created and compared to normal controls to determine the areas where patients with schizophrenia have different metabolite concentrations, thus suggesting regions that may be affected by developmental insults leading to the symptoms of schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
