Chitra Malur, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Long Island Jewish Medical Center, is examining the relationship between increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol and cognitive impairment caused by electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), an effective treatment for depression. Neuropsychological testing and measurements of cortisol will be conducted before, during, and after a course of ECT in 20 patients with depression. This study may help to better understand the hormonal mechanisms that could underlie ECT-induced cognitive dysfunction, but also to better develop strategies to prevent it. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
