Oscar Marin, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of University of California, San Francisco, is working toward understanding the molecular basis of development of a brain region called the basal ganglia. This structure is a major neural system that has a central role in information processing. Dr. Marin will examine genes that control the process by which the nerve cells in the basal ganglia acquire their specific identity. This work may lead to important insights into normal brain development, which could have implications for discovering the genes which underlie disorders such as schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
