Jeffrey Meyer, FRCPC, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Centre For Addiction and Mental Health, is conducting a brain imaging study of the serotonin 2A (5HT-2A) receptor in depression. It is hypothesized that patients with sensitive 5HT-2A receptors in the cortex during depression are more sensitive to the effects of serotonin on these receptors, and they will therefore benefit from serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is anticipated that non-responders will not differ from healthy subjects. This work may lead to a better understanding of how antidepressant medications function in the treatment of depression.
