Catherine Monk, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, is characterizing the central nervous system functioning of infants of depressed mothers, and relating these findings to fetal behavior. Infant brain functioning will be assessed using the electroencephalogram (EEG). It is hypothesized that infants born to depressed mothers will exhibit alterations in EEG activity seen in adult depression, and that these EEG patterns will be associated with autonomic dysregulation (functions such as sleeping and breathing). This work could help clarify which children of depressed parents are likely to become ill and lead to preventative measures. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\Maternal Depression |
