Filoteia Simona Noaghiul, M.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, will attempt to determine the prepubertal signs of bipolar disorder by reassessing in adulthood children who were diagnosed before puberty with depressive illness, with or without comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/conduct disorder (CD), psychotic depression or with a family history of bipolar disorder, as well as reassessing the matched normal control cases. In addition to receiving the same clinical interview, participants' medical records will also be analyzed to obtain supplemental information. This study will help to identify early signs of bipolar disorder. This has been difficult to do previously due to the lack of longitudinal studies of children with presumed early signs of bipolar illness into adulthood.
