Aileen Oandasan, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, will investigate Comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in children and adolescents, which is a complicated and protracted illness which translates into poorer psychological functioning and psychiatric illness persisting into adulthood. For example, depressed adolescents with completed suicide attempts were found to have ADHD rates 6 times greater than other suicide attempters. However, little systematic research addressing the treatment of comorbid ADHD and MDD exists. Dr. Oandansan will compare the efficacy of monotherapy with the antidepressant bupropion (Wellbutrin) versus combined treatment with methylphenidate (Ritalin) and citalopram (Celexa). This double-blind study will compare the efficacy of monotherapy versus combination treatment in youth that are diagnosed with ADHD and MDD.
