Patricio O'Donnell, M.D., Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2001) of Albany Medical College, will explore dopamine's action on the prefrontal cortex's (PFC) cell firing, as the PFC is affected in schizophrenia, and the involved messenger within the PFC is undoubtedly dopamine. In schizophrenia, dopamine innervation of the PFC is altered. Using electrophysiological techniques, both in vivo and in vitro intracellular recordings will be employed to assess interactions between dopamine neurons and prefrontal cortical neurons, to determine the mechanisms responsible for the synchrony between the cell groups, and to determine the role of DA in the modulation of activity states in PFC neurons. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS |
