John Olichney, M.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of University of California, San Diego, is investigating the electrophysiological and neuroanatomic bases of the memory dysfunction associated with major depression and ECT. Patients with depression before, during, and 6 months after ECT will be assessed using event-related potentials (ERPs), which measures brain waves following sensory stimulation, and diffusion-weighted MRI, a special MRI procedure. It is hypothesized that patients with amnesia due to ECT will have an abnormality in a specific ERP, which will correlate with amnesia severity and the volume of the MRI signal abnormality. This work may lead to measures aimed at reducing amnesia secondary to ECT. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
