Ann Olincy, M.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of University of Colorado, Denver, will examine if the decrease in lung disease, as indicated by bombesin-like peptide (lung cells produce these in response to nicotine stimulation; they have been found to be reduced in patients with schizophrenia) levels, in patients taking clozapine, is related to protective effects of this medication or to decreased nicotine exposure. It is believed that smoking is a form of self-treatment for people with schizophrenia, based on the hypothesis that nicotine corrects neuronal defects involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
